Here’s a brief description of how you can test your gold for purity.

Determine if the piece is simply plated gold. Use a magnet. If the piece is attracted to a magnet discard it and do not buy it
If possible, find a spot on the potential gold piece and file a small groove to determine if the piece is simply plated
